SoTeeOh: Icon

April 27 – May 14, 2017

What are the symbols that are immediately and universally identifiable as Toronto icons? As Toronto's reputation grows, and global awareness of the city rises, a set of visual identifiers has been developed that symbolize this city both locally and abroad. The CN Tower has long been the most obvious icon but views of the downtown core popularized by urban photographers, the Raptors jersey made famous by Vince Carter and signage at Yonge and Bloor subway station which is passed by 400 000 commuters on a daily basis have become important symbols of the city.

ICON will focus on photography of visual identifiers that residents can place at first glance and that out-of-towners recognize as distinctly Toronto. Drawing off personal experience, historical research, anecdotal experiences, commercial products and pop culture references such as movies and music videos, SoTeeOh has created a set of images that represent the visual identity of the city. With a diversity of photographs, ranging from iconic product photos, recognizable city views and intersections, cultural landmarks and people. This exhibition continues SoTeeOh’s exploration of Toronto’s developing visual identity through portrait, still-life, product, and urban landscape photographs.
