Patel Gallery is pleased to present 'Face of the Deep' an exhibition with works by Shuvinai Ashoona, Shary Boyle and Rajni Perera.

Face of the Deep highlights the inventive world-making embodied in the work of Shuvinai Ashoona, Shary Boyle and Rajni Perera. This dynamic trio of female Canadian artists engage visual storytelling to generate brand new imaginaries inspired by myth, fable, fantasy and sci-fi. Taken from a passage in the prevailing origin story of Genesis, when “the earth was without form or void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep,” the exhibition title suggests the fluid chasm of potentiality that pre-existed Creation by the paternal word. The “face” here is the creative horizon each artist punctures to give visual form to the flows and eddies of their interior territories. The works assembled in the exhibition juxtapose iconographies of depths and protrusions within each artist’s oeuvre – from deep waters to cosmic expanses; horns, tusks, fingers and tentacles evocative motifs that crest at the surface of the subconscious.
